FAQ's

  • What are the benefits of hiring a running coach?

A running coach is beneficial because they build you a personalize plan based on your fitness levels, history and goals. It is similar to working with a personal trainer - your exercises and workouts are designed for you. They help you customize and adjust based on your schedule and training performance. Our coaches know how to build plans that keep you motivated, healthy and injury free.

  • Who needs a running coach?

All levels of runners need a coach and can benefit from personalized coaching! Whether your goal is to reach a PR time in your next race or to feel comfortable running 3-5 miles, a running coach will get you there.

  • What does a private session include?

A private session is an hour long, outdoor, workout with a coach. Depending on goals and current fitness levels, we cover: running form, techniques, pacing and specific exercises. We will do specific workouts with you as well, track, hills or tempo runs.

  • What kind of workouts will I do?

Workouts are customized on the individual. Examples of weekly workouts are: 4-6 hill repeats, 4x800 at a specific pace. How much and what type depends on your running and fitness levels. If you are just starting out, you might learn how to build your aerobic fitness through run/walk workouts with additional strength exercises designed for runners.

  • How much does it cost & How do I pay?

We have a few different options for training. Privates coaching is $75-100/hr. Training plans range from $90-200/month. Please see our Services menu for a full list with descriptions. We accept cash, check or credit cards (Visa and Mastercard).

The Hot Birds are awesome! HBR helped me train for the 2011 New York City Marathon, my first. Thanks to HBR's excellent personalized training schedule and private coaching (agility, speed, hills), plus some core work, I rocked the marathon. I stayed injury-free throughout the several months of training, I got faster and stronger, and - most importantly - I had a huge amount of fun during training and during the race itself. Since then, HBR has helped me train for a spring half marathon and I am hoping another marathon is on my horizon for the fall.

I chose HBR because I loved the idea of training with other women, especially women who had the moxie to follow their dreams and start their own business. Jessica and Meghan are an inspiration. They are great runners and coaches, and they are fun, warm and enthusiastic. They helped me stick to my goals, they expanded and refined my training regimen, and they kept me motivated. I am a big fan and highly recommend HBR!

I would definitely suggest Hot Bird Running to an experienced runner who's looking to improve times or overall fitness or someone who's looking for a more disciplined/targeted workout than they can get on their own. My main goals were to get a more complete workout than running alone can offer and to learn how to rehab and prevent specific injuries.

I learned about stretching techniques and exercises that have helped prevent the reoccurrence of specific ankle and calf injuries I've had in the past. I also learned cross training routines that break up the monotony of running and provide a full body workout. Since working with Hot Bird Running I've strengthened areas like my core and calves, which improved my times and kept me healthy.

Without a coach I wouldn't have had the knowledge or discipline to do targeted cross training workouts on my own. It was also nice working with a class of runners with different abilities. Jess and Meghan kept things fun and varied, which helped the hour go fast.

When I dug my running shoes out of the closet after a 10 year hiatus from my first love, I knew we needed some good relationship therapy to "make it work" - my shoes were old, I was older, and I wasn't quite sure how to fit running into the crazybusy of working urban mom. Enter Hot Bird Running - I knew Meghan and adore her down-to-earth approach to running and her zeal for making it accessible for everyone and anyone. I quickly fell in love with Jess's high-energy and passion for the sport - their easy to follow, no-nonsense, and intelligent plan helped me run my first 10K in over a decade in record time.

Years ago, I would have never thought to use a running coach - and now I can't imagine running without one! From answering questions to creating community, Hot Bird has helped me reintegrate running into my life in a safe, effective manner that works. And they keep me excited about it, even on those inclines up the bridge!

I found HBR through the weekly run club they do at lululemon Brooklyn.  My main goal last year was to run a decent 10K, and with HBR's training program I did!  Even when I was stuck on a treadmill in Alabama I was still able to follow their program and make progress. Their coaching made things that I would have thought were out of reach seem attainable. HBR gives you a lot of great tips about form, specific types of running, stretching, etc., but it's all in a casual, no-pressure way. They make you want to do your best. They are friendly, motivating and they know their stuff!

I seriously don't think we could have properly trained for a marathon WITHOUT you.  Having a schedule is one thing, but having someone there to push you is another and it really did make a huge difference! I wanted to run the NYC marathon in four hours... really, I wanted to run the marathon in 4:15 minutes and do it injury free and have fun...I had a ton of fun and made it in 4:01:46. And that was huge!! I took my training to a completely different level and thought about running in a much more holistic way. Hello, abs! But seriously, we were rock solid even in our marathon splits -- everyone commented on how amazing it was -- and I absolutely attribute that to training with Hot Bird Running.

After training for three half marathons and just kind of doing it on my own, I realized how much I DIDN'T know about running: hills, speed, track work, etc. I would never have done any of that without HBR and I'm 100% sure it significantly shaved a number of minutes off our marathon time.
